En savoir plusCommando N°3 British Army embroideread shoulder title
Before the adoption of standardized designations in 1942, No. 3 Commando used an identification system specific to each troop, designated from A to J.
Each bore a distinctive color badge, today extremely difficult to identify with certainty. Only a few models could be formally assigned, including that of the D Troop, designed by Captain John Giles, as well as the black dot associated with the J Troop.
In early 1941, shortly before the raid on the Lofoten Islands, the unit was reorganized into six troops. The badges then evolve towards a more direct designation, with the appearance of the "3 Commando" marking in white letters on a blue background, sometimes accompanied by the troop number.
These markings will remain in constant evolution until May 1942, when simplified designations began to be imposed, before the introduction of red and blue standardized models in September 1942.
