This insignia is 2.08" high and 1.18" wide, superimposed on an early “North Africa - Sicily” insignia
The shell is numbered 188B, corresponding to a 1942 manufacture, and its chinstraps are of the “first type” with double-reinforced bar buckle and shaved brass hook
This example was discovered in the area around the town of Tinchebray (Orne)
The 1st Infantry Division took part in Operation Cobra in July 1944, fighting in the area around the towns of Brécey and Mortain, and suffering a terrible German counter-offensive (Operation Lüttig)
