The insignia of the Division was painted atypical way certainly in order to attenuate it
The whole is impacted at the back of the helmet and a laundry number present on the chin strap of the D5549 helmet
This "field" copy comes from the Belgian Ardennes and it has remained in its state of discovery

The 28th Division landed in Normandy from July 22 to 29, 1944 and was engaged in Operation Cobra where it suffered heavy losses
On August 29, 1944, the Division was chosen to parade on the Champs-Elysées for the celebrations of the Liberation of Paris
From November 2 to 16, 1944, she fought in the Hürtgen forest and attacked Vossenack, Schmidt and again suffered heavy losses
In December 1944, the 28th was stationed in the Ardennes Luxembourg-Belgium when the German offensive began and would succeed in significantly delaying the 5th Panzer-Armee "Pansgruppe West"
