The 6th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment landed in Normandy with the 59th (Staffordshire) Infantry Division and fought in July 1944 in the Battle of Caen.

He participated in Operation Charnwood and the fighting of Odon, before the 59th Division was dissolved in August 1944.
